What level does my English have to be to apply?

You should have at least an Elementary level of English to study with us. If you haven’t sat an official assessment before the following information may help you.

Please note you will also be sent a free indicator assessment once you apply.

A1 (Beginner):

You know simple phrases like “Hello” or “How are you?”
You can introduce yourself and give basic information like your name and age.
Example Sentences:
“My name is Maria.”
“I am from Spain.”

A2 (Elementary):

You understand common words and simple sentences about things like shopping or asking for directions.
You can ask and answer questions in short conversations about everyday topics.
Example Sentences:
“How much does this book cost?”
“The bank is next to the supermarket.”

B1 (Intermediate):

You understand the main ideas when people speak clearly about familiar topics like work, school, or travel.
You can talk to people about simple subjects and write short emails or notes.
Example Sentences:
“I have to finish this project by Friday.”
“The museum is very interesting, and the art is beautiful.”

B2 (Upper Intermediate):

You understand main ideas in complex conversations about more general topics like news, sports, or hobbies.
You can talk to people easily, even about new or unfamiliar topics, and write longer emails or reports.
Example Sentences:
“I believe the new law will have a big impact on the economy.”
“We need to improve our team’s performance to win the next match.”

C1 (Advanced):

You understand longer texts and can recognize hidden meanings in conversations.
You can speak and write English confidently in school, work, and social situations.
Example Sentences:
“Although the new policy has some advantages, its implementation poses challenges that need addressing.”
“I think the author’s use of symbolism adds depth to the novel.”

C2 (Proficient):

You can understand almost everything you read or hear in English.
You can speak, write, and explain complex ideas fluently and clearly.
Example Sentences:
“The intricacies of international trade require a comprehensive understanding of both economic and geopolitical factors.”
“The philosopher’s argument is compelling because it balances theoretical rigor with practical application.”

Where is the campus located?

ABC College of English is located in Queenstown. The small city is in the South Island of New Zealand, which is renowned for its beautiful scenery. Surrounded by the breath-taking Southern Alps mountains and set on the shores of spectacular Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown’s a beautiful place to call home.

The school is located in the heart of Queenstown, with many eateries, bars and interesting venues nearby.

Attractions within a short walking distance of the school include Queenstown Bay beach and green areas such as Queenstown Gardens. There are also various supermarkets, amenities and links to public transport nearby.

With world-class ski resorts, great walks, biking trails, jet boating, bungy jumping (just to name a few) right on your doorstep, there is always something new to try.

The Queenstown region is also a foodie’s paradise, boasting an amazing restaurant and bar scene and some of the country’s best vineyards.

Can I work while I am studying?

Generally, yes. If you study for 14 weeks or more on a student visa you may be entitled to 20hrs per week. You can also work if you have a working holiday visa. Always check the conditions on your visa for specific details.

What hours will I be studying?

The classes start at 8.30am. There is a 30-minute break at 10.30am and the second class is from 11.00-13.00.

You study for a total of 4 hours a day and 20 hours per week.

Do you provide accommodation?

Yes, we have a Student Residence and Homestays.

95% of our students reside at our popular Student Residence – Shotover Lodge. Our Homestays are lovely families that have been checked and selected to work with us.  Please book early to avoid disappointment.

How can I secure accommodation?

Once you have booked and made a payment, we can confirm your accommodation booking.

We aim to provide students with their accommodation requests. Please note that Queenstown is a very busy place and occasionally accommodation does book out. You will be notified if this is the case, and we always recommend booking with plenty of time in advance to avoid disappointment.

Is my accommodation guaranteed and when will I receive confirmation?

Once you have booked and made a payment, we can confirm your accommodation booking.  You will receive a confirmation of accommodation from Shotover Lodge within 48 hours of completing your booking.  When we have secured a homestay placement, we will confirm and let you know the details of the homestay family.

 

What are the communal facilities?

Fully equipped kitchen, lounge room, free pool table, couches, television and fireplace. Outdoor BBQ area & outdoor open fireplace.

How easy is it to get around?

The closest bus station is just a 3-minute walk from the school. Queenstown Airport is only a 20-minute bus ride away.

How will I get to my accommodation when I arrive in Queenstown?

We offer transport from Queenstown Airport to Shotover Lodge or your homestay for $95 NZD, or return for $190 NZD.

Can I change the intake dates for my applicant?

If you require any amendments to your booking, you can contact Admissions directly at admissions@qrc.ac.nz. Requests are not guaranteed and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

When will we get an offer letter?

You will receive an offer letter within 24 hours of submitting your booking.

What do I need to bring on my first day?

Bring your documentation, including your visa, passport, and insurance if applicable. Bring some comfortable walking shoes, and of course, bring a smile!

What are the placement tests for?

These are tests to see what level of English you are for your reading, writing, speaking and listening. They are to help place you in the correct class for your abilities.

What if it snows on my first day?!

If the school is closed for your first day, we will let you know via email. If you think this might happen, feel free to contact us in advance at reception@qrc.ac.nz.

Is there Wi-Fi?

An unlimited internet allowance is included as part of your stay.

What's included if I stay at Shotover Lodge?

Shotover Lodge offers studio-style apartment living. Each room has either a balcony or patio with outdoor furniture, a sofa, coffee table and colour TV.
Meals are not included.

Includes:
En-suite Bathroom
Kitchenette including fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster as well as basic cutlery and dishes.
Community Lounge with free pool table, fireplace, couches, television and dining table
Fully-equiped commercial Kitchen
Bedding
BBQ Area with picnic tables and grassed area

How far away is Shotover Lodge from Queenstown?

Shotover Lodge is located in Arthurs Point, just a 7 minute drive from Queenstown, and 15 minutes from Arrowtown. Just down the road from the world-famous Shotover River.
There are buses to and from Queenstown, or it is a 25/30 minute bike ride.

How does the laundry at Shotover Lodge work?

Laundry facilities are a low price of $4 per wash and $4 per dry. Other shared areas include our fully equipped kitchen and our spacious guest lounge. The lounge is decked out with a pool table, fireplace, couches, television and dining tables.

What are the benefits of a homestay?

Students who stay with ABC College of English personally selected homestay families experience a great opportunity to learn and practice their English naturally, in everyday life situations.

What can I expect of the homestay environment?

A typical New Zealand homestay house has gardens and lawns. Each student has their own separate room.

What does the homestay include?

TV, Towels, Bedding/linen, Access to laundry service, Access to Wifi in building (Free WIFI), Heating, Air conditioning, Shared bathroom.

What meals are provided with the homestay?

All homestays include breakfast and dinner Monday – Friday, and all meals during weekends and Public Holidays.

Will I know my homestay family before I arrive in New Zealand?

The school inform students of their homestay family details before their departure for New Zealand.

Whats the minimum age for enrolment?

You must be 18 years of age to enrol.

How far in advance do we have to pay?

You need to pay at the time of your booking. It is important to confirm details with your client prior to finalising your booking.
