6 Weeks – Part-time Evening Classes – 3 Nights a Week

Participants can expect to explore the IELTS topics and the exam requirements, review vocabulary and reading and listening skills and learn strategies and tips for their exam.

Note: All courses are accredited and approved by English New Zealand and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and have a reputation for quality and excellence.

Program Overview

Our IELTS Course offers a programme of study for students over the age of 18, who want to improve their level of confidence, accuracy, and fluency in Communicative English language skills in preparation for the IELTS General Exam.

You will be taught by our qualified and professional ESL teachers with small classes – maximum of 10 students per class (minimum 4 students) ensuring maximum individual attention.

The Course Structure
  • Lessons will take place three evenings per week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for 2 hours.
  • Small groups with a maximum of 10 students
  • All students must speak English while on campus. This is important English language development for students with English as a second language.

About IELTS

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, has set the standard for English language testing to help people achieve their professional, personal, and academic ambitions. The exam is trusted by governments, employers, and thousands of universities around the world.

Queenstown Resort College (QRC) now has the regional testing centre and will be running IELTS tests from the 5 October 2024.

ABC College of English IELTS short courses are designed to prepare for the IELTS exam learning strategies and tips in the listening, reading, writing and speaking elements.

A.E.W.V Scheme

Recently INZ changed their settings under the AEWV scheme and now require a minimum English proficiency level of IELTS 4 (General). ABC College of English (ABC) can assist you in preparing for this via our IELTS Preparation evening classes. The ABC/QRC campus at 7 Coronation Drive, Queenstown is the IELTS Test Centre for exams.

  • 3 nights per week (Monday, Tuesday & Thursday) for 2 hours study of exam strategy and skill preparation
  • Small groups with a maximum of 10 for personalised student support
  • We can also organise a class to suit your business’s needs

Direct bookings accepted only. Minimum number of 4 students to commence class.

Refund Policy: If withdrawal occurs before the first week, a full refund will be issued minus costs incurred up to 25%.

A Pre-course English test is required prior to enrolment to ensure the required English level of pre-intermediate is met.

Available to locals holding an AEWV, Resident Visa, Work Visa or equivalent.

FAQs

I see I need to have a minimum English level of Intermediate to enrol. How do I know what my current level of English is?

Yes, you should have at least a Pre-Intermediate level of English to study with us for this exam.  If you haven’t sat an official assessment before the following information may help you.

Please note: When you apply you will be directed to our pre-course English Level Indicator test. You’ll need to pass this test to enrol.

A1 (Beginner):

  • You know simple phrases like “Hello” or “How are you?”
  • You can introduce yourself and give basic information like your name and age.

Example Sentences:

  • “My name is Maria.”
  • “I am from Spain.”

A2 (Elementary):

  • You understand common words and simple sentences about things like shopping or asking for directions.
  • You can ask and answer questions in short conversations about everyday topics.

Example Sentences:

  • “How much does this book cost?”
  • “The bank is next to the supermarket.”

B1 (Intermediate):

  • You understand the main ideas when people speak clearly about familiar topics like work, school, or travel.
  • You can talk to people about simple subjects and write short emails or notes.

Example Sentences:

  • “I have to finish this project by Friday.”
  • “The museum is very interesting, and the art is beautiful.”

B2 (Upper Intermediate):

  • You understand main ideas in complex conversations about more general topics like news, sports, or hobbies.
  • You can talk to people easily, even about new or unfamiliar topics, and write longer emails or reports.

Example Sentences:

  • “I believe the new law will have a big impact on the economy.”
  • “We need to improve our team’s performance to win the next match.”

C1 (Advanced):

  • You understand longer texts and can recognize hidden meanings in conversations.
  • You can speak and write English confidently in school, work, and social situations.

Example Sentences:

  • “Although the new policy has some advantages, its implementation poses challenges that need addressing.”
  • “I think the author’s use of symbolism adds depth to the novel.”

C2 (Proficient):

  • You can understand almost everything you read or hear in English.
  • You can speak, write, and explain complex ideas fluently and clearly.

Example Sentences:

  • “The intricacies of international trade require a comprehensive understanding of both economic and geopolitical factors.”
  • “The philosopher’s argument is compelling because it balances theoretical rigor with practical application.”
What hours will I be studying?

2 hours in the evening, three days a week (Monday, Tuesday & Thursday) for six weeks.

What other programmes do you have?

We currently offer General English Courses as well. If you’re not sure if your English is at a high enough level for the IELTS Examination Preparation Course (General) (i.e. Pre-Intermediate), you can enrol in our General English course to get up to speed.

Where is the campus located?

ABC College of English is located in central Queenstown. We have classes at the QRC Campus (Sir Eion Edgar House), and our additional classroom facilities located around the corner.
